Fulfilling the requirements for Safeguarding Children (Level 3) cannot be done in one go. That's why staff are given several months to achieve that compliance.
At SLaM, staff starting in their role or newly assigned to this training are allowed 12 months for initial completion. Thereafter, renewal is every three years.
HEE's Core Skills Training Framework specifies that this Level 3 training programme should include reflective and multidisciplinary learning, and should consist of:
- about 8 hours of learning, for the core Level 3 knowledge and skills
Foundation Training
Staff should complete the Foundation training the first time they certify after joining SLaM. To do that, you need to:
- Part A: Complete the e-Learning on LEAP (10 units from eLFH "eLearning for Healthcare" )
- Part B: Attend a workshop session with SLaM Safeguarding leads
You may do Parts A and B in any order. When you have completed these, you will show as "certified" (i.e. compliant) for Safeguarding Children (Level 3) on your Record of Learning in LEAP.
Renewal Training
To meet the 3-year renewal requirement:
- staff should repeat the Foundation pathway by redoing Parts A and B listed above,
Not available: Renewal by Learning Log
- Formerly, staff could renew on an alternative pathway, by submitting a Learning Log of equivalent education and training. As of May 2024, this is not an available option for renewal.
- Safeguarding leads are still reviewing options, but have determined that the learning log was not providing a robust assurance of training state.
Roles & Competencies in Safeguarding
The agreed framework for Safeguarding in healthcare practice is laid out in the Intercollegiate guidance document. Training requirements as delivered at SLaM aim to conform to that guidance.
