The implementation of the Seni Lewis Training Programme(SLTP) has provided the opportunity for us to fundamentally change how we deliver training in the Trust. Historically, mandatory training has been delivered to mixed groups from across the Trust. Rarely have there been opportunities for colleagues or teams who work together to train together. Research evidence suggests that superior learning is achieved when we are able to train/ learn with the people we work with.
For this reason, we have been moving to a place-based training delivery model. This change has happened starting with inpatient services in 2023. Each year Operational Directorates were allocated a fixed number of training days, based on their establishments, which will allow all staff within the directorate to receive training plus additional capacity for turnover and a proportion of Bank/ Agency staff. Ideally, these training days will be used to deliver training within one specific team. However, there is flexibility in this approach that if it is not practicable to deliver training at the team level, training could be delivered at the directorate level e.g. staff from Southwark wards only.
This approach should allow directorates to have greater control over how their training provision is used e.g. prioritising services with lower compliance rates, or rapidly standing up targeted training following a serious incident. It also allows training to be tailored to the services and patient population of that directorate.
As we have now moved into the first refresher year we have continued to provide this model for the refresher course. However the Foundation course is mixed directorates based on requirement.
