Food Safety eLearning (Level 1) - on LEAP
- From January 2026, Food Safety/Hygiene eLearning (Level 1) is set as Mandatory Training for inpatient nursing and support staff and others whose duties include food handling.
- Other staff groups are able to, and encouraged to, access the Level 1 eLearning on LEAP.
- This policy addresses the regulatory need for Trusts to provide food hygiene training to staff commensurate with their duties, and particularly SLaM's change in late 2025 to a catering contractor not providing preparation and serving of breakfasts.
Food Safety (Level 2) - external eLearning
- Staff may also fulfil the mandatory requirement by taking the Food Safety eLearning (Level 2) training which covers a higher level of good food hygiene practice.
- This Level 2 training is provided by an external supplier - you may request access to complete the Level 2 training from this page within LEAP.
- Staff who have completed the higher level Food Safety eLearning (Level 2) should do the Level 2 training again when their renewal is due (i.e. after 3 years).
Food Safety certifications from elsewhere
- Some staff may have completed the Food Safety eLearning for healthcare staff which is available on the NHS Learning Hub (this is the same package as the Level 1 eLearning on LEAP).
- Some staff may have completed equivalent Food Safety training elsewhere.
- In either case, staff assigned to mandatory Food Safety training at SLaM may contact the LEAP team to have their records updated.
